Gloucester and Forest Alternative Provision School prides itself in being a provision that can provide valid and valued support to schools within Gloucestershire. Our Outreach services sole objective is to prevent any pupil being permanently excluded from mainstream provision.

GFAPS Outreach Therapeutic Services
Play is vital to every child’s development. Play Therapy helps children in a variety of ways. It can help to reduce stress and anxiety, support a child to learn to understand more about their own feelings and thoughts or assist them if they need to re-enact or play out traumatic experiences in order to make sense of their past and cope better with their future.
A minimum of 12 sessions is recommended. However, when problems have persisted for a long time or are complicated, a longer-term intervention may be required. Sessions are 45 minutes and held once a week on a regular day and at the same time and place. Rooms allocated for therapy should be quiet and undisturbed during sessions. An assessment is made of your child’s strengths as well as their difficulties using a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). This gives a pre and post score which can be assessed for changes. Sessions are confidential. If concerns arise the therapist will follow the school’s safeguarding procedure. The therapists will feedback to the SENCO at regular intervals.
This is based on Theraplay Informed Practice and attachment theory. It explores the power of play in helping to repair and heal relationships. The therapist facilitates parent/ child sessions, building relationships through PACE-playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy with the main care givers.
